Using Repeating Characters in Custom Formats
To repeat the next character in the
format to fill the column width, include an asterisk (*) in the number format.
For example, type 0*- to include enough dashes after a number to fill the
cell. By using the custom format @*$ (or replace the $ with any
other character) you can type the $ character or other character in a cell and
the whole cell width will be filled with the same character (the @ sign is
replaced with the character you type in the cell and the cell is then filled
with the character after the *). An example of this is shown below:
The format below puts negative
numbers in brackets and turns them red. It
also inserts extra spaces so decimal points line up.
#,##0.00_-_);[Red]-* (#,##0.00)_-;_-* #,##0.00_-_);_-@_-
